Licensing
- What happens when the license subscription expires? Your Zimbra server will continue to function, however those paid-for features will be automatically disabled. To re-enable those features again, a new Zimbra license just needs to be installed. Paid-for features include: a mailbox backup, enhanced search, Microsoft Outlook integration, Zimbra Mobile etc.
- What are the renewal costs for Zimbra licenses? Zimbra is licensed on a annual license subscription basis. The cost for renewing the subscription is the same as the initial subscription.
- Can I purchase a license subscription for more than 1 year? Or can I own a Zimbra license instead of purchasing a subscription? Is there a perpetual license option? Yes, you can purchase a perpetual license for Zimbra. This includes 1 year of support and updates for the first year. You may purchase support (including updates) for no more than 20% for every year thereafter. The perpetual license is a nontransferable right to use the license for the number of mailboxes in the agreement. At the end of the 1st year from the date of issuance of the Zimbra license key and provided that support is still generally available, customer can pay a maintenance fee, no greater than (AMOUNT: total amount x 20%) per year, to continue to receive support, upgrades and updates or can continue to use the then current version for the number of license mailboxes in perpetuity for no additional fees.
- Can I mix'n match Zimbra licenses, for example if I only require 50 Professional licenses and 100 Standard licenses? Yes, you can purchase mixed licenses of any combination. The minimum purchase units is 25 mailboxes for each type of license.
- Is Zimbra mobile licensed on a per mailbox basis? No. Zimbra Mobile is a single fee that applies to all mailboxes on your Zimbra server.
Upgrading from Zimbra Open Source to Network Edition
- Can I upgrade from Zimbra Open Source to Network Edition? (or downgrade?) Yes you can easily upgrade from Zimbra Open Source to the Network Edition.
- How do I migrate Zimbra from Open Source to Network Edition? After receiving your Zimbra Network Edition license, you then download the Zimbra Network Edition installation file. The version you download must the same or a newer version of Zimbra and for the same operating system. Copy your Zimbra license to /opt/zimbra/conf and then perform the Zimbra upgrade process (see details in this FAQ). Zimbra will then be upgraded from Open Source to the Network Edition. To downgrade from Network Edition to Open Source you follow the same process, without having to obtain or install the Zimbra license of course!
- Will all mailbox data on the Zimbra server be upgraded/downgraded too? Yes, all mailbox data is retained.
Support
- What support options are available for Zimbra? What does Zimbra support include? See the official Zimbra support program details. In addition, Agileware provide Zimbra support services, please contact us for details.
Mailboxes
- Are there any quota restrictions per mailbox? No. As Zimbra is software which runs on your hardware the size per mailbox depends entirely on what hard drive space is available. You can, through the web administration pages, assign a quota per mailbox but this is entirely dependent on your business requirements and is not part of Zimbra licensing.
Installation
- I want to install Zimbra myself, can you provide any documentation? See this page, Zimbra Single Server Installation.
- I have offices in multiple locations around the world, can I have a local Zimbra server in each office? Yes, please see the Zimbra multi-server installation guide.
- Where is the administration documentation for Zimbra? See this page Zimbra documentation and the Zimbra documentation wiki.
Software Requirements
- My users need off-line / disconnected access to their email and I do not want to install Outlook or Thunderbird. What options do I have? Try Zimbra desktop - it's free!
- Do I need any special software to use the Instant Messaging feature of Zimbra? No, Instant Messaging is available in the webmail client as well as Zimbra Desktop. However, Zimbra Instant Messaging uses the Jabber protocol so any Instant Messaging client that supports Jabber can be used.
- Do I need to install special software on users computer to use Zimbra? No all you need is a Web Browser: Fire Fox, Microsoft Internet Explorer of Apple Safari.
- For users, what operating systems does Zimbra support? Windows, Mac, Linux. Pretty much any OS that has an upto date Web Browser, IMAP or POP3 email client or can interface with MS Exchange. See Desktop compatibility for more details.
- What operating systems does Agileware recommend to run Zimbra on? Agileware recommends Ubuntu, SUSE Enterprise Linux and Centos. For a complete list of supported operating systems for Zimbra Network Edition, see http://www.zimbra.com/products/downloads.html and for Zimbra Open Source Edition, see http://www.zimbra.com/community/downloads.html
- Zimbra does not officially support Centos, but you are recommending it why? Correct, Zimbra at this point in time do not officially support Centos. However, we and many others have production Zimbra deployments on Centos which is operating perfectly fine. As explained on the Centos website: "CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible". There is a Request for Enhancement with Zimbra to officiall support Centos, see this Official Support for ZCS Network Edition on CentOS. For more details on this topic, see Zimbra CentOS support posts.
- Can I run Zimbra on a Windows Server? No, Zimbra requires a Linux or *nix based operating system. You could always virtualise a Linux operating system on Windows though.
- Do I have to install Zimbra on a stand-alone / dedicated server? Or can I use the server for other functions? Yes you can use the server for other functions. Zimbra installs all the necessary software required to function and so there will be Port conflicts between such common applications as LDAP, web and email services if they are already on the server. The solution in this case is to have the services run on either unique ports or bind to different IP addresses.
Hardware Requirements
- Can you recommend a base hardware specification to support 25 to 100 users? System requirements for a single Zimbra server installation and for a multiple Zimbra server installation. For a basic system, Agileware recommends 2GB RAM, Pentium 4 3GHz+ CPU, 2x160GB+ SCSI or SAS (or fast SATA2 10K RPM) hard disks in a RAID configuration of RAID0, RAID1 or RAID10. RAID5 is not recommended due to poor write performance. When choosing disks for your server please read this section on Zimbra disk recommendations. Hardware requirements will increase based on load, type of usage and other software running on the system. We recommend software or hardware RAID for email systems and a daily backup regime. - What is the process of applying a Zimbra upgrade? Schedule downtime for the Zimbra server. Perform a complete backup of the Zimbra server data. Download the latest Zimbra upgrade. Install the upgrade over the existing installation. Check results. The actual Zimbra upgrade process itself can take 30 minutes or more depending on the size of the installation.

Backups
- Does the Zimbra server have to be taken offline to do backups? Is there any way to do a live backup? Zimbra backups are performed LIVE, the server remains operational and accessible, this is a unique feature of Zimbra Network Edition. Zimbra Open Source Edition does not have the same backup/restore feature. From the Zimbra Administration Guide - Full Backup Process: Places the account’s mailbox in maintenance mode to temporarily block mail delivery and user access to that mailbox. and Returns that account’s mailbox to active mode and moves on to the next one
- Where are backups stored in the Zimbra Network Edition? Backups are stored in /opt/zimbra/backup. This directory should be included in a off-site or off-server backup regime.
- Does the Zimbra Open Source Edition include automated backups? No.
- How often does the Zimbra Network Edition backup process run? Daily.
